Campus Police Officer
The Central Virginia Community College, Office of Public Safety and Police supports the educational mission of the college by administering security, and safety programs that comply with state and federal mandates and that provide resources to create a safer learning community. Our Mission Statement indicates that the staff of CVCC Department of Campus Police is committed to: Providing public safety services and performing duties with efficiency, professionalism and integrity and in all matters. Maintaining a safe and secure environment. Protecting the college equipment, facilities and supplies from damage, theft or other negative situations. Enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the rules and regulations of CVCC and the VCCS. Educating the community on emergency preparedness and personal safety and security.
As sworn law enforcement officer the position is responsible for the safety and well-being of Central Virginia Community College students, faculty, staff, customers and visitors by maintaining order and protection of life and property through ensuring the enforcement of laws, ordinances and college policy within the CVCC jurisdiction.
Patrols assigned area in vehicle and on foot; performs active campus community problem identification; attend campus related meetings; maintains high patrol visibility to assist in crime prevention; actively performs routine patrol, concentrating on high incident areas, to detect possible criminal activities or needs for service; regularly checks college property, facilities and surrounding areas within the jurisdiction of the campus; monitors radio broadcasts and other officer(s) to ensure awareness of activities in area and to provide assistance, if needed; identifies, reports, and responds to suspicious activities or needs for service .
Qualifications:
Classes in police science or a combination of education, training, or related criminal justice certificate program. Must be at least 21 years of age with current valid Virginia driver’s license with no major violations on driving record. Current law enforcement officer certification or ability to obtain from department of Criminal Justice Services. No criminal record; a background investigation will be completed. Note: Federal law prohibits a person convicted of domestic violence from possession of a firearm. Be certified or able to obtain DCJS certificate as a police officer in the State of Virginia. Those without current certification must successfully complete basic law enforcement training program at a DCJS sanctioned police academy in the State of Virginia. Ability to qualify for certification in use of a firearm and all approved and issued police equipment. Must possess ability to complete designated ICS/ NIMS trainings.
