Teaching Faculty in Surgical Technology

Tidewater Community College

This 12-month teaching faculty is designated to fulfill the responsibilities and functions of the Program Director for the Surgical Technology Program in accordance with the accreditation requirements of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) as recommended by the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA). The designated faculty member provides leadership and accountability for the organization, administration, continuous review, planning, development, and general effectiveness of the program and ensures compliance with all applicable CAAHEP and ARC/STSA standards, policies, and reporting requirements. The faculty member collaborates with instructional faculty, clinical affiliates, advisory committee members, and institutional leadership to ensure program effectiveness and student achievement of learning outcomes.

  • Responsibilities may include work during the day, evening and/or weekend programs of the college, as well as its distance learning programs.

  • Accreditation Documentation, Advisory Participation, and Program Quality


Required Qualifications

  • An associate degree in surgical technology and a bachelor's degree in a health profession discipline are both required.

  • Professional credential(s) as required by discipline specialized accreditation, including Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or equivalent; current certification as required; minimum four years of professional surgical technology experience; minimum two years of teaching or educational experience in a CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Technology program.

  • Meet ARC/STSA eligibility requirements for Program Director.

  • Demonstrated professional competencies within the surgical technology discipline, including curriculum oversight, program evaluation, accreditation compliance, and leadership.

  • Faculty must possess the knowledge and skills necessary to ensure program effectiveness, student learning outcomes, and compliance with professional and accreditation standards.
