Job Summary:

The Division of Addiction Science, Prevention, and Treatment in the Department of Psychiatry (DOP) has an opening for a full-time (1.0 FTE) open rank (Instructor of Clinical Practice through Sr. Instructor of Clinical Practice) - Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in its ARTS Adult Outpatient (AOP) medication-assisted treatment (MAT) clinics.

The Provider for the AOP clinics is responsible for facilitation and provision of direct clinical care for adults with substance use disorders (SUD). The position reports to the Associate Medical Director of the ARTS Adult Outpatient Program (AOP) and is co-supervised by the Medical Director. The position provides outpatient behavioral health care to patients with SUD, psychiatric conditions, and dual diagnosis patients; daily responsibilities include in-person patient evaluations, prescription administration and maintenance, and ongoing clinical consultation with the treatment team. This position works independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team to provide quality patient management, education, and continuity of care.

This position is responsible for collaborating with the Department of Psychiatry, CU Medicine, and University of Colorado leadership and staff, in supporting the aforementioned team, providing direct patient care, building relationships with other departments, meeting required outcomes, quality metrics, and productivity expectations and other administrative duties. The direct patient care position involves in-person work collaboration with multi-disciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Operations and Patient Care:

  • Provide direct, in-person care to ARTS patients in conformance with applicable state, federal, and accreditation agency regulations

  • Manages substance use disorder treatment including medical evaluation, treatment planning and ongoing medication management needs of adult populations in the outpatient OTP setting

  • Develops individualized treatment plans in collaboration with behavioral health and counseling staff.

  • Prescribe and monitor medications for OUD including methadone, buprenorphine in accordance with federal and state regulations

  • Provide patient education on substance use disorders, relapse prevention, and harm reduction strategies.

  • Support medical team in providing leadership in each clinical setting.

  • Demonstrate a collaborative, collegial, and productive relationship with the Division Director and other Departmental leaders.

  • In collaboration with team, manage patient concerns and issues.

  • Participate in relevant patient safety and quality improvement initiatives through ARTS and the Department of Psychiatry.

  • Represent the University of Colorado School of Medicine and the Department of Psychiatry with the utmost integrity and professionalism.

  • Support ARTS medical team's clinical oversight of patient care and billing

  • Coordinate care with community providers as necessary

    Administrative Duties:

  • Ensure timely, accurate, and auditable clinical documentation for medical and nursing team.

  • Perform other related duties, including participation and collaboration on grant-funded special projects, as assigned by the Division Leadership team

  • Attend weekly clinical team meetings at ARTS clinic(s)

    with policy review and development aligned with applicable state and federal regulations

  • Attend and/or lead clinic and Dept of Psychiatry meetings as necessary.

    This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Instructor of Clinical Practice or Sr. Instructor of Clinical Practice based on experience and qualifications as indicated below:

    Instructor of Clinical Practice or Sr. Instructor of Clinical Practice:
    • 1-3 years of related clinical experience at rank or equivalent experience.
    • Masters degree related to licensed discipline
    • Active and unrestricted NP, APRN/RXN or PAc in the State of Colorado and Board Certification commensurate with training
    • Active DEA registration (or ability to obtain)


    Preferred Qualifications (applicable for all ranks)
    • Experience working with individuals with substance use disorders and co-occurring psychiatric disorders.
    • Familiarity with trauma-informed care and harm reduction principles
    • Experience working with clients who are involved with probation, human services, and/or other referral sources.
    • Experience observing, monitoring and intervening in drug/alcohol treatment
    • Experience providing collaborative, integrative health care to patients
    • 2-3 years of prior experience managing behavioral health patients in clinical settings
    • Experience in making psychiatric diagnoses and managing mental health disorders
    • Experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary behavioral health setting
    • Experience in telehealth
    • Teaching experience valued
    • Research experience valued

    The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

    Instructor of Clinical Practice: $122,000 to $137,000 for a 1.0 FTE, prorated for less than 1.0 FTE

    Sr. Instructor of Clinical Practice: $122,000 to $137,000 for a 1.0 FTE, prorated for less than 1.0 FTE
